How do you stay calm around bad drivers?

Driving around here lately is going to make me lose my fucking mind.

The roundabouts definitely bring it out, but really it’s just the constant bad driving. People not yielding, pulling out in front of you, staring at their phones, drifting between lanes, going 15 under. On ramps are apparently just throw on your signal and fucking go, while nobody already on the highway bothers to move over and merging turns into a mess.

Since having kids I’ve become way more defensive behind the wheel because every dumb move feels like somebody putting my family at risk.

I even make a game out of trying to get through my 7 minute drive to work without calling someone a fucking idiot. I usually lose by the Whole Foods roundabout.

Anyone actually figure out how to stop losing your shit while still staying alert?

Y’all have ruined me.

Ever since that post about the Aces Towing truck at the laundromat by Whole Foods, every single time I go to Whole Foods I catch myself looking over into the laundromat parking lot to see if the damn truck is there.

I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t need this. And now apparently this is just part of my Charlottesville routine.

METEORRRRR ☄️

I’ve been looking forward to this! Tonight is supposed to be one of the best nights for the Perseid meteor shower, and it’s a new moon tonight so there won’t be any moonlight getting in the way.

Sounds like after midnight is the best time to start watching, with things getting even better into the early morning hours.

Hoping we get some clear skies!

Subaru City

Why are Subarus so insanely popular in Charlottesville? I’ve heard the mountains/outdoors explanation, but PA and WV are arguably more mountainous and I’ve never noticed anything comparable there.

Is it demographics? UVA? Local dealerships? Lesbians? The 60+ crowd? Something else specific to Charlottesville?

Also, does anyone happen know someone who buys broken Subarus??

Thinking about starting a pop-up.

I’ve been working on NY-style pizza (and Detroit) for the past couple of years, and somewhere along the way it became more than just a hobby.

Friends keep telling me I should start a small pop-up.

The first three photos are from today’s bake. I’d love some honest feedback. Do these look like something you’d buy? If so, where do you think a pizza pop-up would fit best around Charlottesville? I feel like brewery space is already limited.

Whole Foods Has the Most Consistent Pizza in Charlottesville

Whole Foods makes a better large round pizza than almost every local pizza shop.

It’s cheaper, it’s more consistent, and I leave happier more often than I do after spending $30+ elsewhere.
I’ve had enough pizza around here to feel pretty confident saying it.

A fresh whole pie is about $20. If you’re just grabbing lunch, the slices are around $4 each—but don’t judge them straight from the case. Take a couple home and reheat them on a steel or stone, and they’re excellent.

Are there places that make a better pie on their absolute best day? Not really. But when it comes to consistency, value, and flavor, I don’t think anyone in Charlottesville is beating Whole Foods on a regular basis.

Feel free to roast my opinion, but I’ll come close to dying on this hill. 😤

Crozet Pizza or Sal’s? Help me finish my Charlottesville pizza tour.

I moved to Charlottesville in October of last year and made it my mission to try as many local pizza spots as I could. I’ve worked my way through just about all the places that were recommended, and now I’m down to my final two:

- Crozet Pizza
- Sal’s Pizza

If you had to choose, which one would you go to first, and more importantly, why? Is there a must-order pie or something each place is known for?

Convince me where to go tonight. 🍻

Too young for T-ball, or the perfect age?

Parents, coaches, and former Little Leaguers, I could use your advice.

Our son turns 4 in November, and McIntire Little League made an exception to let him play T-ball this fall since he’ll only be a couple months shy.

He absolutely LOVES baseball. He asks to play every day. But we also don’t want to start him too early and risk him getting discouraged being one of the youngest kids out there.

If this were your child, would you let him play this year or wait until next season? And if you’ve been in this situation, how did it turn out? ⚾️

Richmond: Pizza + Bfast + Kids

Tried posting this in r/rva, but it got removed. Figure I could get a decent opinion here, maybe.

My wife, two kids (4 and 2), and I are taking a trip to Richmond and staying in The Fan. I’ve never been. I’m on the hunt for a really good New York-style pizza.

From what I’ve found so far, Zorch seems to be the consensus pick. Is that still the move, or is there somewhere else I should be looking?

I’m also looking for recommendations on great breakfast spots, parks, or other things to do with young kids in or around The Fan.

My only must-do is Vinyl Conflict, but I’ll probably save that for nap time while my wife hangs back at the rental.

Thanks!

The air smells better in Free Union

Now, I’m still less than a year into living here, so maybe it’s just novelty talking.

But I used to love taking random drives before I had kids, and I’ve started doing it again recently. Every time I end up out around Free Union, I’m reminded how incredible this area is. The air genuinely smells different. Cleaner. Fresher. Like you’re a hundred miles from anywhere.

It’s a dumb post, but it’s Father’s Day, and I’m giving myself permission to share random thoughts on Reddit. Free Union might be the most beautiful area surrounding Charlottesville. I can’t get enough of it.

Recommend me some more places for good cruising?

Another Deli Discourse 🥪🧀

I’ve got less than a year under my belt living in Charlottesville, but how on earth is there not a real deli?

Not a grocery store counter. I mean an actual standalone deli. Jewish deli, Italian deli, old-school neighborhood place, whatever version of it. Somewhere you can get quality meats sliced to order, good cheeses, imported stuff, and people behind the counter who know their products.

I know Wegmans, Harris Teeter, etc. exist, but Charlottesville is still missing an actual deli entirely. And no, driving to Richmond isn’t a real solution.

Every time this gets brought up, people start reminiscing about Padows at Barracks Road. I hear people mention it in real life all the time like it was the last great deli Charlottesville ever had.

Which honestly makes me wonder: if people loved it that much, how has nothing filled that gap? And how does a proper deli not survive here?

Boiled Peanuts?

When I spent some time in Florida, there were always roadside spots or random gas stations selling boiled peanuts. My wife remembers seeing them a lot on trips from Charlottesville to North Carolina too, but I haven’t really found them locally or around Charlottesville.

Are there any places nearby that sell legit boiled peanuts, especially roadside stands or small local spots?

I’m making my own today either way, but figured I’d ask.

Also throwing in some andouille near the end. 🤤

What is everyone doing?

I’m just wrapping up dinner. Not too worried about politics tonight, starting any sort of militia, just gonna pet my cat once my kids go to sleep.

Heading to Aberdeen Barn tomorrow for a birthday dinner. I’ve never been before and love an old school steak house. I was honestly pretty excited…until I started reading some recent reviews.

Seems like it’s a bit mixed lately, so now I’m not sure what to expect. Still going either way, just hoping to make the most of it.

For anyone who’s been recently:

- Is it still worth it?

- What’s the safest/best. Leaning prime rib but open.

- Anything you’d avoid?

Appreciate any up-to-date feedback. 🫡
