The moment Prey stopped being a normal sci-fi game for me
I'm a few hours in and I need to talk about the intro, because I think it's one of the best hooks I've played in a long time.
You wake up in your apartment, get the helicopter ride, and go through the usual "day one at the lab" setup. It all felt a bit routine, and I thought it would be a standard sci-fi game. Then the testing room happened. Seeing the Mimic jump out of nowhere, followed by waking up in that same apartment, is when I knew the game was messing with me.
What got me is how quiet it is about it. There's no big cutscene saying "you’re in a simulation." You just notice small things the same morning, the same stuff, and something that feels slightly wrong. I spent an embarrassing amount of time checking every corner of that apartment before I found anything.
And then you get out and see the real Talos I for the first time, and the tone changes completely. Looking back, the opening made me trust my surroundings, so everything after it hits harder.
Now I'm paranoid about every object in the game. I put the wrench through a coffee mug just to be safe and felt kind of dumb about it.
Did the opening get you the same way? And did anyone figure out the twist before the game spelled it out? I'd like to know what I missed.
