Accidentally overpaid for work-study after graduating. School says I owe under $100. What happens if I don’t pay?

Hi everyone, I recently graduated and got an email from my school saying I was accidentally overpaid through my work-study job. The amount is less than $100, and they are telling me I need to repay it.

I’m trying to understand what can realistically happen if I don’t pay it back. Since I already graduated, can they still place a hold on my account, block transcripts, send it to collections, or affect anything with future financial aid? I’m not trying to make a huge issue out of a small amount, but I also don’t want to repay something if it was their mistake and I’m not actually responsible.

Has anyone dealt with a work-study or campus payroll overpayment after graduating? Did your school waive it, let you appeal it, or make you pay it back?

I’m planning to ask them for a breakdown of how the overpayment happened, but I wanted to hear from people who have gone through this before.
