Zebra Haworthia - Repotting begins

Through previous posts, community members have kindly educated me that this plant was

  1. Getting rootbound

  2. The soil was too organic, not enough perlite type of material. This was also leading me to underwater because I didn't want the plant to sit in wet soil for fear of root rot. And so the plant has shriveled up a bit from not enough water

So the time has finally come to begin the great repotting - get it into better soil and a slightly bigger pot so I can water it properly and get it back to a state of plumpness

The first photo shows the roots all separated out. Two pups also separated out easily, with their own roots, so I am going to make them into new plants. The other pups weren't coming off easily so I've left them there for now

Second and third photos show what it was like before I pulled it out and separated the roots.

A couple of questions:

  1. Advice I've heard on this sub is to wait about a week for the roots to callous, before putting them back into soil. Does this sound right?

  2. The soil that this was originally in. Can that be reused if I mix perlite into it? Or would you suggest a change?
