Question about New Grad Nurse hiring

I’m an out-of-state rising third year in nursing school, and I keep seeing videos of current nurses talking about their experiences trying to get jobs after graduating. I chose nursing because I heard there was a need for it and that it would be easy to be hired. Apparently, that is not the case anymore and it’s getting VERY competitive.
As someone who goes out-of-state for nursing school, this is extra worrisome because as much as I’d like to get my foot in the door by simultaneously doing part-time work in hospitals of my home state, New York (since that’s where I want to work after graduating anyway— I’m only out of state for school), I will not be able to do so. Even finding nursing related jobs when I’m back in New York for Summer break is extremely difficult as employers don’t like to hire seasonal or temporary.

So instead, I’ve been doing Summer Volunteering at various NY hospitals. I’m not sure if that would help with the hiring process in the future, but other than Summer externships, I’m afraid I would not be able to be an internal hire when I’m applying to be a nurse in the future. I heard a lot of hospitals like to hire internally so if someone is working as a PCT for Mount Sinai, for example, it would be easier for THEM to get the job as a nurse when they apply.

Can anyone confirm or deny, or provide any insight regarding this matter? Any info or experience you’ve had would help!! Thank you so much for reading all this.
