Genelec Inc. Movie Nights

In our Boston Experience Center, we’ve started having movie nights for our team that works here. This gives us a chance to spend more time listening in the room and take full advantage of our Dolby Atmos system. We bring a couple of couches into the room, so it feels more like a home theater than a studio space.

We are typically watching a movie in 7.1.4 using a Blu-Ray, although a few movies have been in 7.1 or 5.1. Our system can handle up to 9.1.6. Due to demos and product testing (and sometimes just for our own listening), our room goes through system changes. Lately, the setup has been:

Left and right: 8381A

Center: 8351B and W371A

Side Surrounds: 8341A and 7360A

Rear Surrounds: 8341A and W371A

Height channels: 8341A

LFE: 7380A

We also have 8341A’s for Wide channels, although those don’t get used unless playback is in 9.1.6.

Our signal flow starts with either a Blu Ray player or PS5 (PS5 is needed to read 4K Blu Rays as our Blu Ray player is on the older side). This is connected to a Trinnov Altitude 32 which decodes the HDMI signal and sends out AES/EBU digital audio. The AES/EBU outputs are connected to our DAD Penta AX32. We use the Penta to switch between Trinnov playback and playback coming from our main computer in the room. The Penta is then connected to our Genelec system via AES/EBU. Channels are routed through Genelec 9301 for bass management control; although, we are currently running everything full range. The room is calibrated and controlled using the GLM software. We have a 9320A Reference Controller that we use as our monitor controller.

The last movie we watched was Back to The Future, the Dolby Atmos mix in 7.1.4. This was a great mix! Everyone who attended the movie night loved it. Favorite scenes include The Power of Love scene which sounded so good we had to listen to it again the next day, and the lightning storm near the end of the film which made great use of the surround and height channels.

Other movies we have watched in the room include: It (2017), Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Godzilla Minus One, Halloween (1978), Shrek 2, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Elf, Star Wars Empire Strikes Back, Baby Driver, Jaws, and The Big Lebowski.

Any recommendations for our next movie night? 😊
