Opinions on no electronics in class?

For both of my classes today, my profs stated no electronic devices at all during lecture, which didn't affect me too much but I thought it was a huge departure from what I'm used to. What do you all think about it? I remember in my econometrics class someone straight up packed his bag and left when my prof said the policy.

I also notice registration in no-electronics classes may drop by 1 to 10 after the first class period of the semester is over depending on time of day and elective status.

But what are your thoughts as students?

Weekly Smash Ultimate event FRIDAY!

Hey everyone!

This semester my roommate and I are hosting a weekly Smash Ultimate tournament EVERY FRIDAY in the Journalism building at 6pm. We welcome ALL students to come on out and have some fun! This will be every Friday of the semester when classes are in session (i.e. not on fall break)

Only thing is we ask that you bring your own controllers. We unfortunately cannot supply extra controllers, but we do have consoles and screens set up before the event starts.

The link at the top will update to the latest event each week automatically.

Bus Nerd Update: Bus Information for New Students and Appointments

Hello, Dawgs! I welcome one and all newcomers to this BEAUTIFUL campus! As everyone moves back into their apartments and dorms, I want to give a quick synopsis of our bus system now that the subreddit is gaining more attention. However, who is this guy telling me what to do? Well, I'm Gaby, I'm a fourth-year at UGA and I want YOU to know how to get around campus safely and comfortably.

The UGA bus system is a unified system of routes and rough schedules that are meant to take you from anywhere to almost anywhere else on campus where and when you need it. The following are the most important routes to consider when getting from place to place:

Central East: Connect North/Central Campus to the Cedar Street Science buildings and East Campus (Joe Frank/IM Fields)

Main Campus: Connects North/Central Campus to Snelling/Boyd Research, SLC, and Aderhold/Forestry buildings. Also extends to Joe Frank and IM Fields.

Campus Housing: Connects almost all dorms, dining halls and rec centers on campus together (exception of Building 2266).

North-South: Connects the Multimodal Bus Center to North and South Campus, the Driftmier Engineering Center and Oconee Access Park and Ride.

I will post a link to the TPS site which shows detailed maps and direction.

Please remember to follow these etiquette rules while on the bus:

  1. Wait for other students to exit before entering the bus.
  2. Only take up 1 seat if possible, and if there are 2 adjacent seats available, move to the window seat.
  3. If all seats are taken, stand in a place on the bus as far from the bus exit doors as possible, and take off your backpack.
  4. If someone with a disability needs to sit down, please give up your seat to them.
  5. When exiting, please either wave or say thank you to the bus driver. Their job is quite stressful, and every piece of gratitude means the world.

I hope with this you are more prepared for the year ahead! But if you do want more 1 on 1 advice about the bus system, OR need help with Athens Transit, I have MANY 15-minute time slots for meetups on Central Campus, These will begin on Friday, August 14 and extend until Friday, August 21. Appointments must be made at least 4 hours before the start time.

Registration advice for incoming students

Hello hello, Dawgs! First and foremost, I want to welcome all our new Dawgs to this AWESOME institution. But something is looming…class registration. It’s overwhelming, it’s so much information at once. But I want to give a couple of tips for how to simplify your planning!

  1. Prioritize Major Requirements.
Your fundamentals should always come first, which usually involves your English composition courses and maths. This can also include some starter Major Requirements such as ECON2105 in Terry and CSCI1301 in Comp Sci.

  2. Take advantage of advisor time.
When you get to your appointment, make sure to ask as many clarifying questions as you need. Ask about what a General 4 year plan would look like for your major and potential Minor. Having advance plans lets you adjust your schedule to your needs much easier when needed.

  3. Save PE for later.
Most students will tell you to wait until Senior year for your PE credit. Trust them. PE classes fill quick and have lots of turnover, so it’s best to wait until you have both more registration experience and higher priority.

  4. Use the waitlists!
Most starting classes will have higher turnover since students’ priorities change. If there’s a class with only a couple of people on a waitlist and you think it’s worth signing up for, use the waitlists! It also signals to the registrar accurate demand so they can open more seats.

  5. Ask around.
Once the semester starts, get ideas of how other students in your major have done their classes when they were in your shoes.

That’s all my advice for now, but I want my dawgs to be as prepared as possible for the greatest time of their life. If you are a transfer student, I’m always available to answer questions about any differences that this college has.

Also, if you’re in Terry, I would LOVE to help you with your schedule if you’d like. I’m very versed in the requirements and order of how to best space things out. Feel free to send a DM!

GO DAWGS!

Bus Nerd Update: Closing Spring Statement and New Questions

Hello, Dawgs! I hope you are all making the most of this wonderful May, whether that be chilling at home, going out with your pals, or hunkering down for Maymester or an internship.

I wanna say thanks to the several people who said hi and knew who I was out and about this semester. That was very sweet of you and I love seeing people informed.

I also want to open the floor to any transfers, new freshmen, or new apartment-renters to ask questions on the bus system! If you have a question on how to get to class, or even how to get to campus via transit from your off campus apartment, don't be afraid to ask!

I hope everyone has a great summer! I will be in a regression analysis class on campus over the summer, so if you see me, don't be afraid to say hello! I love you all, and have a wonderful PERFECT summer!
