My players need to reach a peak of a mountain to find a gemstone. The mountain is a desolate snowy place filled with ruined buildings from people that used to live there. A couple npcs have told the party that those who climb the mountain rarely return due to its harsh weather and at times rough terrain. However, an oni lives on the mountain who hunts people that climb to the top.

I really want the party to be scared of the Oni, and maybe have a few encounters with it before being forced to fight it at or near the peak. However, I'm a newer DM and I don't know how to make the horror work for this. So, kind people, can anyone give me tips or explain how to make horror work for this please. :)
