It's a series with like three or four books that I read in the 2010s. The main character's guardian is his abusive older brother. I remember the older brother making the main character cook "hash" for breakfast. The main character meets an older man who gives him work around his house and eventually brings the kid to learn how to fly space ships. The kid eventually goes to either a school for pilots or military training. I think the cover was black mostly with a picture of a planet, maybe Mars. It's been a long time so this is about all I can remember.
