Interested in geothermal geology, how practical is it as a career?

Hi! First time posting on Reddit.

I’ve pretty much set my mind on becoming a geothermal geologist. I’d say I have the passion, grit, and other considerations covered, so that’s not really my concern.

My concern is the industry itself.

From the little research I’ve done, geothermal energy seems surprisingly unpopular. The main impression I get is that it’s not cost-efficient enough (whether to develop or for how much output it pumps out) compared to other energy sources.

I know geothermal isn’t viable everywhere, but I happen to live in one of the top countries where it’s considered a super strong option. Even then, I rarely hear people talk about it or its impact.

TLDR; my question is: why don’t we use geothermal energy more? Is it still a good specialization to pursue?

I genuinely love the field, but I also have to consider whether I can build a sustainable career in an industry that seems less prominent than I expected…

**I’m also open to hearing about other geology specializations. I haven’t given up on my childhood dream just yet, haha!
