Hey Reddit,
I have a large restoration project that involves replacing *a lot* of old bench wood in a public, outdoor setting in Florida. Lots of full sun exposure, and relatively close to salt water (1 mile from brackish, 5 miles from salt). These are historic benches, and are part of the property. As such, I'd like to retain the original frames and character of the benches, so not looking for "turnkey" or retail solutions.
Have had extensive talks with a local lumber yard and they suggested Ipe (A) and Sapele (B) as best solutions if replacing with wood. I've done some research and have a pretty good handle on the required maintenance for both.
What I'm looking for is real world beta on how well HDPE and composites have aged for you in similar, or even harsher (real winter and summer) environments. Not just color fading, but cracking, splintering, etc. What can I expect? What kind of maintenance did you perform? Did you find it worth the initial costs? Are they *actually* comfortable? Do they get excessively hot? etc
Most of the info I've found is primarily from HDPE furniture manufacturers, so it is, of course, very biased.
Tell me your stories. Thanks!
