I have seen this a lot, people overcorrecting or just discussing styles of buildings and usually ending with contradictory answers. I recently got into an argument about this myself and It got me interested in general opinions on this.
This usually comes down to splits or joined movements or even more commonly - local branches of international movements. I am not saying these terms are incorrect but I feel like that enforcing their use has no benefit. Arguing whenever building is more Historicist or Eclectic or more Gründerzeit or Neobaroque, when Historicism is a style that consists of all the "neostyles" aka "revivals" and Gründerzeit is the German "branch" of it and Eclectic style is just different neostyles/revivals mashed together. None of these terms is more correct than the other and in the period they usually were used even more interchangably than today - Yet some insist that if the building is German, it can be only Gründerzeit.
I see no need to enforce the German terms when speaking English - especially in case of these styles that get translated regularly - and even more so here in an international setting. It would be as weird as using Novorenesanční or Neogotiek in German, just because the building had a Czech or a Dutch architect. It is a matter of translation and many of these terms are either specifications or synonyms. In many cases it seems to be a sense of patriotism kicking in with some people.
Trying to correct Neobaroque or historicism as Grunderzeit or the other way around is like saying that one cannot call a stepladder a stepladder because it is a ladder. It is even worse with Art Nouveau/Secessionism/Jugendstill. Many people treat them as different when Secessionism and Jugendstill are just local branches of Art Nouveau. These styles are of the same period and influeced each other. The German wikipedia itself even uses Art Nouveau as a synonym for Jugendstil - yet I still had an encouter in which someone claimed one cannot exchange one for the other.
Do you think that English terms are worse or lacking compared to the local variants? What makes a building not an Art Nouveu and more Secessionist or Jugendstil or Skønvirke?
