Im currently in arbitration with a former employer. If im awarded a sum of money, and it falls under wage theft, it looks like im liable for taxes on the whole amount before paying out lawyers. Is there any tax break for lawyer fees? If i use a big number like $500k for an award, my math comes out as follows. State 5% and fed taxes take $200k, lawyers take 30% ($150k), leaving me with $150k. Does that sound about right? Do i have any way to recoup any of that?
