Dragonsteel Prime - Rank War Review

This is about my OC squad, Dragonsteel Prime. You can find the breakdown on them here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/worldtrigger/comments/1u3a1gq/oc_squad_dragonsteel_prime/

I RPed a total of eight Rank War matches against friends using them, so here's how the concepts I laid out for the squad ended up working.

Overall: The total points-wise performance was satisfactory. They finished with 33 points, while in canon the current number 4, Ikoma Squad, finished with 34, and that's not counting that they didn't get bonus points from the previous Rank War season, so I think my estimation of their squad's ranking was pretty good.
Their overaggression also played out well. Though they won half their matches and tied two of them, they only received the last squad standing bonus a single time (their last match, where they wiped the board and wound up with a whopping 9 point total).
The

As for the individual agents...
Angurion: His Side Effect was just an essential for his combat style as I planned it to be, and he made good use of all his Triggers. His ability to almost instantly delete any non-melee ace he got in a 1v1 with, and guarantee a mutual kill in a bad situation (via locking onto one target with his Side Effect and ignoring all defense to get past their guard), meant he never bailed without scoring. He earned more points than the rest of his squad combined. If there's one issue, it's that he's to good in his role. All of Dragonsteel squad save X-Ray tend to fight alone and aim for vulnerable enemies, but there's only so many of those, so his success made agents Toru and Anglo largely redundant.

Tebiya Toru: He died in every match and only ever scored twice, nor provided support to his allies. Nor did he ever use Chameleon- I even forget he had it. If he took Grasshopper instead and did joint work with Anglo, he should perform better. Though I do believe our RP style unnaturally favored longer ranges in comparison to real Rank Wars.

Anglo Davian: Did surprisingly well, considering how I originally thought he'd struggle. His operations weren't remarkable scoring-wise, but he multiple times drove enemies to disfavorable positions, hampered their movements, and assisted his squadmates without getting targeted despite the vulnerability of the squad's lone wolf style of fighting.

Connor 'X-Ray' Davian: Provided excellent support with dummy beacons and covering fire to the rest of his squad, and made good strategic calls, filling in some of the role of captain Angurion is bad at. His number of scores is something that may have been to low considering his skills, but he still outclassed Toru and Anglo in that as well.

Wreth Atche: Though operators rarely get the spotlight, I'm glad to say he did, in Round 7 where Dragonsteel built a plan to create mass chaos and confusion. His excellence in parallel processing was vital to the squad.

Match Record:
Round 1: 3 points, victory, vs Kageura, Azuma and Suzunari. The spread was 3-1-2-2. Round 7 was used as the basis for this match, with Dragonsteel replacing Tamakoma.

Round 2: 2 points, loss, Vs Kageura and Yuba. The spread was 2-5-2. It came down to a battle of aces, and Angurion couldn't match Kageura with their Side Effects countering each other out.

Round 3: 5 points, victory, Vs Suwa and Nomina (OC). The spread was 5-1-2. Suwa wound up not doing much due to harrying and heavy weather. The fight between Nomina and Dragonsteel was close, and since Angurion was off facing Suwa squad, it was his squadmate's time to shine. The two squads annihilated each other, leaving Suwa holding the field but without many points to show for it and enemy survivors waiting the match out.

Round 4: 4 points, tie, Vs Nasu and Utona (OC). The spread was 4-4-1. Nasu was stable and secure, while Dragonsteel and Utona damaged each other. Nasu claimed the survival bonus.

Round 5: 4 points, victory, Vs Genno (OC), Denton (OC), and Kyoko (OC). The spread was 4-0-3-3. It wound up turned into a pair of 1v1 squad matches, as Dragonsteel fought Denton and Kyoko fought Genno.

Round 6: 1 point, loss, Vs Kageura and Nomina (OC). The spread was 1-8-0. An extremely open map made Ema a huge threat, stealing a large number of kills.

Round 7: 5 points, tie, Vs Ninomiya, Nasu and Yuba. The spread was 5-5-2-0. Having picked the map and weather and prepared dummy beacons in their free slots, Dragonsteel created mass chaos and scored galore, until Ninomiya wrecked them, destroying their every advantage and deleting their combat agents as soon as the other squads were gone.

Round 8: 9 points, victory, Vs Kyoko (OC) and Genno (OC). The spread was 9-2-0. Early scorings, a favorable map, and getting a huge multi-kill with meteor while their enemies fought each other, made this Dragonsteel's best match by far.

Feedback or pointers for future matches are appreciated.

OC - Charles Kilo

His custom Thruster does a very momentary burst in any direction to provide the force to snap blades he catches with his oversized swordbreaker, which doubles as a greatsword. The 3 range is due to how he can hurl his spear and use thruster at the same time.

The light structure of the spear counteracts Raygust‘s weight, but it really lacks power. His swordbreaker can entangle and break enemy blades, with good slashing power due to being great sword sized, but is bulky and heavy. The custom thruster boosts weapon speed with microbursts, the normal one boosts power when used to swing, covering his main weakness whichever weapon he uses.

What nonsense is Jamato talking about?

"I can't kill you, Spoke, because it will start a revolution unlike all seen before."

What? Who cares about Spoke that much? Who's even going to know if he dies? The other prisoners? They tried rebelling already, and even with a mace on their side, were just slaughtered. To boot, now they've almost all killed each other off. Worrying about Spoke becoming a martyr is nonsense; Null's entire existence is a secret. Nobody would know what happened and even if they did, Spoke is not a popular figure. Jamato might get some cheers for executing him. The only possible source of 'rebellion', the prisoners, is nearly all dead and surrounded by Null's army, and frankly would not care.

Where on earth are lines like this coming from?

What does Mako do?

Mako is a trigger we see in the Border Briefing File, but never on screen. However we have a little more data in it, as in the sealed environment books, a list of the abilities for character in the simulations included a reference to Kogetsu: Mako, so we know it's a Kogetsu optional trigger. The game also interprets it mechanically as inflicting a randomized damage value between certain ranges. This is, as far as I know, all that is known about this trigger.

So, what are all the theories about it?

Dragonsteel Prime Vs Yuba Squad Vs Kageura Squad (Fanfiction)

The OC Squad involved in this match

https://www.reddit.com/r/worldtrigger/comments/1u3a1gq/oc_squad_dragonsteel_prime/

I doubt I can get nearly as good as the original material, but given the slow rate it's coming out at, I hope this will at least be entertaining and do the characters justice.

Stage selected: Industrial area. It has a lot of close together and tall buildings, which can obstruct snipers, but also plenty of open areas for firefights.
The beams of light come down from the sky, and the agents are transmitted onto the field.
Cue World Trigger music
Angurion puts a hand to his shoulder, activating his bagworm, the green cloak appearing from nothing, then glances at his radar just once and starts running.
Commentator: "With everyone deployed onto the field in random locations, it looks like the snipers are using bagworm and looking for good spots to fire from while the others aim to rendezvous. But agent Kitazoe is in trouble."
The map shows Kitazoe, Ema and Angurion to the north, with Toonoka and X-Ray in the west and the others scattered across the south and southwest areas. But Angurion's symbol is moving rapidly towards Kitazoe.
Zoe runs along an alley, holding his two grenade launchers up beside his head, when something drops from above on him, cloak flapping. Angurion's scorpion blade cuts him down the middle from top to bottom, slicing him nearly in two.
Excessive Trion loss. Bail out.
He explodes into a green light that shoots away into the sky in a streak, arcing away.
Commentator: "Agent Kitazoe became the victim of captain Angurion's classic assassination attack!"
Ema pauses, glancing that way, then resumes climbing his building.
Fujimaru: "Zoe is down already. Dragonsteel's ace must be there. Obishima, incoming."
Agent Obishima turns, glowing kogetsu sword out, as Toru charges her. A glowing cube appears beside her, and separates into glowing Asteroid bullets that shoot forwards, but are blocked by Toru throwing up a shield.
He arrives with a swinging kogetsu of his own, which she parries, then slashes back. They cross blades for several strokes, the glowing swords clashing, until he jerks his knee up.
A glowing scorpion blade shoots from it, landing a shallow stab in her belly as she steps back, trion smoke leaking from it.
Obishima: A scorpion from his knee. I'll need to be careful. She leaps back, forming a Hound cube and firing. Toru darts in, getting close enough to avoid most of them, but still takes several minor hits.
Yuba: "On my way." He runs across the map, headed towards Obishima's location, but his operator barks a warning as a new blip appears on her radar.
A glowing blast tears it's way through a building and shoots out just ahead of him, breaking concrete. X-Ray aims again, his radar projection right beside his Ibis. He had to drop his bagworm to make the shot, since enhanced radar takes a trigger slot.
Yuba darts behind another building and doesn't stop moving. That would invite death to a sniper who hits through cover. Instead he zigzags and places as many obstacles as he can between him and X-Ray's position. With this many the shots aren't very accurate, but the need to evade slows him down.
Another figure comes around a corner down the street and levels his assault rifle. Agent Anglo opens fire, gimlet bullets hammering at Yuba as he throws up two shields, going full defense, but the shields crack.
Yuba charges, shields holding, hands going to his guns, ready to draw the moment he enters range. But just before he does, Anglo fades from view, activating chameleon.
Yuba looks about a moment, on guard. Yuba: "The sniper shots stopped. Did X-Ray do a runner?"
Fujimaru: "No, I still have him on radar."
Tonooka: "A dummy beacon. He'll be using bagworm to reposition."
Yuba: "Find him and take him off my back."
Tonooka: "Got it."
Yuba resumes his movement, but the need to track Anglo and watch for sniper fire slows him down. Indeed, several times Anglo reappears, always at a distance, to fire again before fading with chameleon, and X-Ray starts shooting once more, indeed from another location.
Tonooka is moving to get an angle on X-Ray, but the map makes it hard.

Meanwhile...
Toru takes a leap back before Obishima's slash, then darts in and slams his blade against hers. Another scorpion blade shoots out- but this time, from his forearm, scoring her arm.
He drives her back a few steps, cutting another small slash with just his kogetsu, dark smoke now rising from three spots on her body.
Their blades snap back and forth, ringing with the sound of connections. They are closely matched, each one's subtrigger dealing the main damage.
At a warning from their operators, they each pull back a few steps, pausing their clash to look down the street.
A black-uniformed figure stands there. He grins, showing pointed teeth. Kageura.
Kageura starts running towards them. Toru spins, leaping at Obishima despite the imminent threat. Her eyes widen in surprise as she parries his blade, an attack made one-handed, and his other hand comes in holding a scorpion to stab her.
She blocks that to, but it transforms around her weapon, looping to hold it, and he uses that to jerk her kogetsu to the side and slashes with his own, cutting across her in a solid hit.
He leaps back as Kageura arrives, fading from view. The squad captain pauses a moment as Obishima stumbles back, trion leaking badly in a flood.
Then Kage whips one arm out, a scorpion forming and linking from a second scorpion, slamming through a spot in the air from a distance. Toru reappears, the mantis run through his heart.
Kageura spins, loosing the weapon and slicing Obishima in half.
The voice sounds for both of them at once.
Trion supply system damaged. Bail out.
Two new beams shoot into the sky and arc away over the city.
Commentator: "Wow! Agent Toru attempted to get a kill and flee, but his blow didn't do enough damage. Captain Kageura got both points!"
Toru drops back into his quarters, frustrated. How could I have forgotten about his Side Effect?

Ema sights down his scope from his high position. "I have a visual on captain Yuba."
Kagerua: "Take him down."
Anglo reappears, firing on Yuba with his superior range, and the white-suited captain turns, leaping behind some cover.
A shot comes from the opposite direction, high-angled, shattering a hastily raised shield, and blasts a hole in his side.
Ema: "Injured only."
Yuba dashes to the side, making Ema lose his sightline, as a Ibis shot from X-Ray breaks through the wall beside him, missing by inches.
Anglo pursues, racing after him and barreling around a corner, then a second. Captain Yuba spins, handguns coming out. His abrupt change of direction catches Anglo by surprise, and now he's in range.
Bang bang bang bang
The shots tear through agent Anglo, moving with insane speed- not even enough time to raise a shield. Yuba's firepower just takes him apart, not leaving enough time for a final counterattack.
Excessive Trion loss. Bail out.
Tonooka levels his egret rifle as he finally spots his foe in the window of a building. X-Ray has his radar out, judging Yuba's position, and won't drop his bagworm until he's ready to fire.
Tonooka watches for that moment, and it comes, the bagworm cloak dissolving. At that instant, he fires, hitting X-Ray in the head.
Trion relay system damaged. Bail out.
Commentator: "Yuba squad managed to turn the tables on it's pursuers! X-Ray and Anglo bail out!"
Commentator: "Only the three squad's aces and two of the snipers are remaining on the field! Doesn't that mean Dragonsteel Prime is at a disadvantage?"
Azuma (commentating): "Normally it would. But their ace excels at one-on-one fights. For him, fewer people on the map is better, and the terrain limits the use of the snipers. Only Yuba's movements from being pressured by the others put him into agent Ema's line of fire, and Tonooka had to get pretty close to hit X-Ray. Many snipers would have been spotted."
Angurion races south, bagworm still on, and Kagerua moves west. Commentator: "It looks like all three aces are about to clash!"
Trion flows from Yuba into the air as he raises his guns. Kageura soon charges down the street towards him. As soon as he enters range though, he leaps to the side, into a building, Yuba's shots shooting through the air where he was.
Yuba turns, firing, shots hammering through the wall, but can't see his target very well. Kageura advances, and Yuba falls back, wound gushing. Cracks appear, running up his neck and onto the side of his head.
Azuma: "Kageura doesn't need to kill Yuba. That wound is serious, and he's expending his Trion firing like that. He'll bail out soon. However..."
Angurion leaps in from behind, bagworm vanishing, twin blades appearing in his hands. Yuba turns, firing, but Dragonsteel's captain is already to close. He reads the electric signals in Yuba and dodges, then darts forwards and rams his blades through Yuba.
Trion supply system damaged. Bail out.
The wind blasts out from Yuba as he vanishes, the streak of light going up then away.
Kageura steps out from his building, scorpions in his hands.
Kageura: "Just you and me then."
The two rush forwards and engage each other, blades snapping back and forth. Their Trigger sets are almost identical, and at this range, Angurion's shotgun is useless, so it's just two scorpions against two scorpions.
Angurion tries to read Kageura's moves, but Kageura's side effect warns him of every attack, changing his reactions. Their weapons move at lightning speed, flashing through multiple forms as they battle.
Azuma: "At this angle, the snipers can't get involved. It's down to skill."
Commentator: "And their Side Effects largely counter each other out. They're almost perfectly matched!"
Angurion falls back, taking a slash along his side, Kageura following. A downwards slash nearly takes his life, parried hastily by a blade shooting out and extending down the length of his arm.
Angurion: I'm outmatched. I need to withdraw.
He leaps back, fading from view, but Kage's weapon whips out, clashing into a scorpion Angurion manifests to block it, chameleon dropping a bare second after being raised.
Kageura: "You're not getting away that easily!"
Angurion is driven back by Kageura's attacks, the former A-Rank agent's superior skill overwhelming him. He takes multiple cuts and nearly loses a limb.
Back in the operation room, X-Ray leans over Wreth's shoulder.
X-Ray: "Captain, Yuba's sniper is still out there. If you can draw Kagerua onto a rooftop, he might shoot him."
Angurion: "What about Kage's Side Effect?"
X-Ray: "It's better than nothing."
Angurion nods, fending off another attack, and shatters a window, jumping into a building and dashing up some stairs. Kageura follows, a mantis strike blocked by a blade appearing on Angurion's foot.
They fight their way up, Angurion giving ground rapidly and losing trion, emerging onto a large flat rooftop.
Kageura attacks, forcing Angurion back once more, inflicting another injury. The battle continues, Angurion being forced back towards the building's edge.
Ema sights down his rifle, surveying the area. When he shoots, I'll get him.
Tonooka, from his own location, aims at the two fighters. He must be hoping I'll get involved. Try to steal the point for killing Angurion, or help him against Kageura?
If Kage falls, I can just wait this match out. But they could hunt me if he remains.
Kageura feels a tingle on his skin. He jerks aside as Tonooka fires, the shot passing through the air beside him. Angurion leaps in, blade stabbing, and draws Kageura's trion.
A second shot, from an entirely different direction, passes beside them and strikes Tonooka, but he rolls aside just in time.
One of Kageura's blades slams down, deflecting a follow-up from Angurion, and his other runs him through.
Angurion jerks as the fatal wound is inflicted, trion pouring from it. He has only a moment.
Angurion: "Then let's die together."
One of his scorpions vanishes, and a shotgun appears in his hand, forming in a moment, pointed at the ground. He fires.
The explosive shots engulf that section of roof, breaking a hole in it. But when the smoke clears, Kageura is standing outside it, a shield between them.
Tonooka: "Bail out."
Commentator: "Agent Tonooka withdraws from the battlefield! Kageura squad holds the map, and earns the survival points!"
The screen displays the final score.

Theory: Ninomiya's Pyramidals

The author has stated when shooter bullets are in different shapes than normal, it's because of drastic modifications to where Trion is allocated between the three primary stats. We see Ninomiya sometimes deploy cubes that split into pyramids, rather than more cubes.

Therefore, I believe this may be him taking away all the extra range his high Trion offers him to up firepower and speed even further. After all, in most situations he won't need that range. This makes him even more dangerous, as it essentially lets him divide up Trion between just two parameters after a certain point.

This is my OC Squad, from the made-up Dragonsteel branch. They used to be A-Rank, but weren't good enough to stay there, mainly due to overagression and lack of teamwork. In Rank Wars, they prefer to charge right out of the gate and try to score before others can rendezvous, and often operate independently. Since this means they usually lack support, they carry chameleons for use in escaping tricky situations.

Angurion - The captain and ace, he has a powerful Side Effect, allowing him to read the electronervous flow in his enemies to predict their moves exactly, giving him an incredible advantage in duels. However doing this takes enough attention he can't use it well in a 2v1 (unless he wants to mutual kill one by dying to the other), and it's pretty short range. Without that Side Effect, he's a decent attacker, but nothing incredible.

He works as an assassin, roaming the map and taking out loners. When attacking a group, he uses his shotgun to create chaos and disrupt formations before going in with his swords. He doesn't use many tricks like Mole Claw or Mantis with his scorpions, just shaping them into the same style of swords Kazama uses 99% of the time. He almost never bails out without scoring at least one point.

Toru - An attacker with an aggressive fighting style, attacking with Kogetsu while at the same time using his scorpion for things like armblades or mole claws to inflict extra wounds. Of course this leaves him unshielded.

Anglo Davian - A gunner who often struggles in this squad. His trigger set, using escudo to cover himself if he wants to use gimlet, is much better with support or being support, which Dragonsteel's tactics are not conductive to.

X-Ray - He earned the nickname for specializing in sniping through walls, using his enhanced radar to aim. Even still, he misses as often as not when wallsniping, but he has a reputation for using the technique. Of course he can't use his bagworm when firing with the radar to aim, so he deploys dummy beacons to help cover him. He's still left as easier to find than most snipers, and his reputation makes him a target, but the squad will often use that to lure people in for Angurion to kill. He's more levelheaded than most of the squad, and if he were the captain, they would probably fare much better.

Wreth Atche - He excels at observation, and seeing everything. His parallel processing skills are vital to the squad, seeing how much they operate individually, and he sometimes complains about not getting enough credit. Indeed, with a lesser operator, the squad's normal divide-and-conquer strategy would fall apart. (The insane Trion amount is because this character is a reference, and it doesn't effect anything, so I didn't feel any compunctions about putting it in).
