Advice for getting into data center work?

I'm trying to start a career as a data center technician and wanted to hear from people already in the field about the best way to get started. I'm currently in the St. Louis MO area and there seems to be plenty of data centers around here. I don't currently have any prior experience aside from just building PCs for myself and family/friends.

What qualifications are most important for entry-level positions?

Is college a major factor, or are certifications and hands-on experience just as valuable?

I’m also considering building a home server/home lab both as a learning tool and as something to put on my resume. Would that actually be helpful from an employer’s perspective?

Those are just some of the things I’m considering right now, but I’d appreciate any other advice from people already working in the industry.
