Hi! I'm considering DIY-ing backyard makeover (with literally no experience). Was hoping for some tips (or honest advice that I should hire an expert after seeing the pics).

Issues:

  1. Immediate eyesore: the pale green exterior stair structure next door that I'm hoping to address either with cedar slats and/or planters (but I worry about potential rodent issue from the bushes as the door opens into our kitchen).

  2. Mid-distance views: neighboring building facades (and construction views - they've been doing construction for 6 years!) and fire escapes. Again, address via privacy trees?

  3. Upper-level views: windows looking down into our yard. But the previous owners put concrete (and did a shabby job). The concrete is breaking at various places. I do not want to put grass. I was thinking I could get the peel and stick tiles (likely not long lasting) or outdoor thinset. Tried outdoor rug but in the CA sun, it lasted 1 year before it disintegrated and created more work. I'm particularly worried that the concrete tile management is likely an expert job, but grateful to receive any and all initial thoughts!
