The Scarab Pectoral Necklace of King Tutankhamun (ca. 1332–1323 BC) ✨

This artifact is a flexible pectoral necklace recovered from the tomb of King Tutankhamun (KV62) in the Valley of the Kings. The piece functions as a complex chest ornament secured by integrated suspension chains and a traditional counterpoise clasp (Mankhet) to balance its weight.

Iconography and Symbolism:

Central Motif: The pectoral features a central scarab beetle carved from premium lapis lazuli positioned within a celestial solar barque. The scarab is depicted pushing a carnelian disk, a cosmic combination representing the rising sun on the horizon and eternal rebirth (Khepri).

Flanking & Surrounding Elements: The central scarab is flanked by two protective rearing cobras (uraei). The surrounding composition incorporates hieroglyphic signs signifying stability (Djed), dominion (Was), and beauty (Nefer).

Chain Assembly: The supporting straps consist of an intricate, articulated chain of alternating uraei and scarabs resting on Heb (festival) signs, symbolizing eternal celebrations. Each strap features a highly structured bead border on both sides.

Terminals: The straps terminate in curved gold components holding fine cloisonné vultures. These figures represent Nekhbet, the protective patron goddess of Upper Egypt, extending her wings over the pharaoh.

Material Composition and Dimensions:

Materials: Gold, carnelian, lapis lazuli, turquoise, and feldspar.

Strap Length: 50 cm (19.6 inches).

Pectoral Width: 11.8 cm (4.64 inches).
