Handling a problematic non-profit CEO [N/A]

I'm the first and only HR Director for a rapidly growing nonprofit. There has been ongoing tension between the CEO/President and one of his direct reports, who have worked together for a number of years. There's a lot to it, but the issue I'm focusing on right now is the way he speaks to her, especially in front of other people in meetings (it's not great privately, either). I've had several conversations with him about how to communicate in a more productive and respectful way, but it just isn't landing. How do you handle an org leader who singles out, scolds, and undermines a direct report, AND does it in front of other staff? Apart from talking to him about the way this impacts morale and organizational culture, what are some concrete steps we can take? We've already arranged for him to start working with a leadership coach next month, but this employee is struggling now.
