Is the 30% off for applying for a credit card at CPWM a scam?
The signs posted in the store very clearly say that if you apply for a credit card in store you will save an extra 30%, and the items I wanted were already 20% off, so for 50% off on something I REALLY wanted I went in and applied. Mind you, I apply for a new credit card maybe once every 10 years. I have an exceptionally high credit rating and only applied for $3,000 to purchase what would have been about $1,200 in patio furniture. All of my other cards have a limit at least 10x that. So imagine my surprise when it didn’t *instantly* accept my application.
I spoke to the manager and she said that the best she could do would be to come back later when I get the card and she could give me the 20% off even if the sale had ended.
I feel scammed. There was no reason to not give me instant credit. But the more I thought about it, why would they since the savings is conditional and they already got me to sign up for the card? There is apparently no way to cancel the credit application. I have received no follow-up correspondence.
The manager also said it was a “soft” pull. That is always a lie. I immediately received a notice from AMEX that my credit report had changed.
Needless to say to say, I will never fall for that scam from any other retailer, but I’m pretty sure there is a class action suit waiting to happen here.
