This week at PulseMedica, Sourav Sarkar, Ph.D. and myself had the pleasure of hosting a Capstone Project team from the University of Alberta. Collaborating with the UofA was a fantastic experience. It gave us the opportunity to expose students to real-world challenges while gaining fresh perspectives on problems we actively work on. The team tackled a particularly interesting challenge: real-time tracking of floaters in SLO imaging. The results were genuinely impressive—and we’re excited about the potential to incorporate some of these learnings into our first-in-human clinical study later this year.

After presenting their final results to the broader team, we had the chance to take the students on a lab tour, where they saw firsthand the treatment device their work could ultimately support. That moment really brought everything full circle—and their thoughtful questions showed just how deeply they engaged with the problem space. How many student projects can say they contributed directly to the development of a medical device?

We’re looking forward to continuing this collaboration and exploring more opportunities within the incredible innovation ecosystem at the University of Alberta.
