Neighbor Wants Me to Give Her My New Kitten

Okay. I just need to get this out because I feel like this is ridiculous.

Friday morning, a little kitten was scratching at my front door. Was immediately enamored with my husband. I’ve been wanting another cat, but decided to leave it up to The Cat Distribution Center. We were leaving for the weekend. Called our vet and all the local shelters to see if she was chipped (she was not) and if anyone could board her for the weekend. We have two senior pets, a cat and a dog, and we weren’t going to throw an unknown variable in without doing the proper check-up and quarantine of a new animal. So we put out food, water, and made a makeshift shelter and decided if she was still roaming around when we got back it’s the Distribution Center at work.
Rolled up home after our trip (Sunday morning, so we were gone two days) and not 10 minutes later here she comes strolling into our yard and up our back steps like she owns the place.

Found out she belonged to a neighbor a few houses down. They recently had a baby so they put her outside to be an outside cat. Again, no chip, and no collar. Walked over to the neighbors, told them we’d be happy to take her and they immediately said we could have her. So, I’m pumped. Think things are a done deal.  I was wrong.

Three and a half hours later, next door neighbor starts messaging me about how they have been taking care of the kitten, and she and her daughter had become attached. They already have five cats, and had initially said they have a ‘full house’ which is why they hadn’t asked the original owners about taking the kitten in. But as soon as I scooped her up, she’s messaging me asking if I’d be willing to give her the kitten since they ‘bonded’ over the last few days. Said her and her kids have been crying all day and completely broke up about it.

I tried to make my points. We have the space, money, time, etc., Cat Distribution Center, and that if it doesn’t work and my senior pets don’t take to her or if they don’t interact well, that I would absolutely let her know. Since then, she’s messaged me several times, sent her kid over to ‘check up’ on the kitten, asked for photos and video of her to see how she’s doing, and just all around blowing up my phone. She even asked if I would bring her over so she could hold her before bed because of how torn up she is. And to please ‘not throw her in the trash can’ if it doesn’t work out. That last comment straight up pissed me off.

The last thing I want to do is cause an issue with our neighbors. But this is insane. If what she said is true, she’s already had weeks apparently to do something for this kitten and only wants her now that someone actually stepped up?!

I’m not in the wrong here, right? She’s being insane, right? I’ve put my phone down and refuse to answer back right now because I would straight up say something not very neighborly if I did.
