How do you start a business?

Maybe this sounds stupid, but I'm genuinely confused by how people go from having an idea to running an actual business.

Every success story skips over the messy middle part.

Shark Tank makes it look like you have an idea, build a product, and suddenly investors are interested. YouTube entrepreneurs make it seem like you just form an LLC, launch a website, and customers magically appear.

But in reality... how does it actually happen?

Let's say you're good at fixing things and decide to start a handyman business. You form an LLC. Great. Now what?

How do you get those first customers? Do you knock on doors? Post in local Facebook groups? Offer discounted work to build reviews? How long before you actually make enough money to survive?

Or maybe you start an online store. How do you know what people will buy? How much trial and error is normal before something finally works?

How do you pay yourself from a single-member LLC?

I run a small service-based business through a single-member LLC, and this is the first year I've really had to think seriously about owner compensation.

The business had a decent year on paper, but when I look at my business bank account, it doesn't feel like I have nearly as much money available as the profit numbers suggest.

A lot of cash ended up going back into the business through things like software subscriptions, equipment upgrades, marketing expenses, and maintaining a buffer for slower months. So now I'm trying to understand how people decide what they should actually transfer to themselves.

Do you pay yourself a fixed amount every month? Only take draws when there's extra cash? Keep a certain amount in the business before taking anything out?

I already have a meeting scheduled with a CPA to go over the tax side of things, but I'm curious how other single-member LLC owners approach this from a practical standpoint.
