At a cross roads with my next career…
I have two opportunities lining up as I retire from the military—one with the federal government and one with a private-sector company. The government role seems more relaxed and slower paced, but it also appears to have less structure, with people often covering multiple responsibilities. While I appreciate stability, I’ve always enjoyed a faster-paced environment with clear expectations and accountability.
The private-sector opportunity offers significantly higher pay and a supervisory role where I would have ownership of my area and report directly to the plant manager. It also seems to have a strong team culture and positive work environment.
I’m trying to decide whether to prioritize the stability of the government position or pursue the private-sector role, which seems to align more with my leadership experience and preferred work style. For those who have worked in both sectors, what influenced your decision, and did you enjoy working in the private sector?
