Restaurants Starting to Remove Amex, localized or a new trend?

I’ve noticed restaurants that used to take Amex are no longer accepting. A couple switched to Toast and after the switch stopped taking Amex. Is this just a localized issue or something happening on a larger scale? The common answer has been the transaction fee is too expensive. Although the difference is not that large, 2.8% for Visa/MC and 3.4% for Amex.

Edit: I’m experiencing it in the New England area. The changes seem to be happening as tourist season starts
