Driving Tips

Do not follow the person in front of you. Instead, observe the person in front of you to anticipate whether they brake so you don't accidentally run into them or cause a vehicle behind you to run into you.

If you drive slower, generally it's expected that you travel in the far right lane in all cases(except for in areas with exit ramps exiting from the far left lane). If you are driving faster in order to pass slower traffic it's generally expected that you pass while driving in the far left lane and then moving back over to a normal travel speed in the middle lane or lanes.

Left lane exit ramps are frequently located near airports and downtown regions. They're also frequent near the intersection of two or more Interstate Highways which are often designed to be the most direct route toward another major location(such as to a neighboring state or to a different major urban region).

Interstate Highways marked with 3 digit numbers usually travel either around a City or directly through a major Urban area. Interstate highways consisting of two digits generally connect these locations to each other from state to state. If you observe a map you will see two- digit Interstate Highways located on countryside stretched across several different states and three- digit interstate highways often contained to the region of one state or city.

3 digit interstate highways frequently contain toll roads and you can sometimes avoid paying tolls by avoiding traveling on or across 3 digit interstate highways which are often localized to an individual city.

On interstate highways even numbered routes are listed as eastbound/westbound and odd number highways are called northbound/southbound. These are not perfect lines but will generally get you close to where you want to be. However some 3 digit highways travel in a continuous loop so you will either eventually reach the same point if traveling in either direction or you will arrive at the end of the highway if traveling on a beltway or straight direction. Each end of a beltway or throughway 3 digit highway is often at or near the intersection of a continuous loop highway.

While driving on an Interstate 3 lane or 4 lane highway It's expected that you can place one invisible imaginary car length between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you for every 10 mph of road speed. This means if you're driving 60 miles per hour on the highway there should be an empty space maintained between your front bumper and the vehicle in front of you that is approximately 30 yards or meters of distance while driving. If you are driving 10 mph then it is the length of one car. This acceptable distance is a factor that auto manufacturers have engineered your brakes to react to. Not maintaining this distance is generally considered "following too closely" or "tailgating".
