«Atlético’s Control vs Málaga’s Hope — Can Málaga Really Steal a Point?»

Hey all, I’m keeping an eye on La Liga newcomers this season and how teams adapt to the league’s style. Curious to see who’ll actually settle in and who’ll fade away after the first few matchdays. Today’s game: Atlético Madrid vs Málaga — classic clash of styles: total control vs counter‑attack hope.

Looking at last season’s numbers, the picture is pretty clear:

  • xG: Atlético — 1.55, Málaga — 0.90. So Atlético will consistently create higher‑quality chances, while Málaga will have to rely on rare flashes of brilliance.
  • xGA: Atlético — 0.85, Málaga — 1.70. Málaga’s defence looks vulnerable against teams that know how to break them down methodically.
  • PPDA: Atlético — 7.0, Málaga — 10.5. Atlético will suffocate the opponent with pressure, while Málaga will basically give up the initiative.

If Atlético dominate across all these metrics, Málaga’s only real chance will be to catch them on a rare counter. But with such a high xGA and low pressing intensity, they’ll likely spend most of the game defending — and probably concede.

What do you think: will one flash of brilliance be enough for Málaga to grab a point? Or is this one pretty predictable?

If anyone’s been following Málaga, tell us — are there any hidden strengths that don’t show up in these numbers?

Málaga’s LaLiga return: The biggest tactical traps they’ll face

Málaga is back in the top flight after 8 years, but LaLiga won’t care about the nostalgia. The stats from Segunda tell a clear story: they create danger (xG 1.54), but they can’t seem to finish (low conversion), and their defence is leaky (xGA 1.42).

Their aggressive press (PPDA 8.5) could be a double-edged sword against technically superior LaLiga attackers. One misplaced press isn’t just a lost ball — it’s a free counter for the opponent.

The coaching staff is trying to plug the holes with pragmatic signings:

  • Fernando Calero (CB) — to shore up that fragile backline.
  • Juan Cruz (LW) — to finally fix that conversion rate.
  • José Salinas (LB) — for stability on the left side.

But the reality check is brutal: their opener on August 19 is against Atlético Madrid. Atléti’s compact shape and ruthless counters are tailor-made to exploit exactly the weaknesses Málaga showed in Segunda.

So, what’s the most urgent fix for Funes? Is it the leaky backline, the finishing issues, or the risky press? Drop your thoughts below — I’m curious to see what the sub thinks! 👇⚽

From Segunda to LaLiga: How Will Deportivo Change Under Hidalgo and What Role Will Riazor Play?

Welcome back to our series on newbies in LaLiga! Today, we're diving into Deportivo La Coruña.

We have a classic dilemma on our hands: cold hard stats are screaming "watch out, defense is leaky," while the hearts of Riazor fans are whispering "we'll tear everyone apart." Let's see who wins — the numbers or the atmosphere. 🌡️

Key Stats Breakdown

Important note: These are averaged stats from the 25/26 Segunda season, and data for the second tier is limited. Consider this our baseline — we'll track how these numbers evolve (or break) in the top flight.

Let's break down the numbers and see where they might backfire in the elite:

  • xG 1.35: Solid for Segunda, but not overwhelming. In LaLiga, defenses are more compact, so those same chances will have lower quality and conversion rates.
  • xGA 1.3: This is a red flag. A defense that concedes 1.3 xG per game in Segunda will likely give up more against technically superior attackers in LaLiga.
  • PPDA 8.2: High pressure style from new manager Antonio Hidalgo. But in Segunda, mistakes were forgiven; in LaLiga, one misstep means quick counters.
  • Conv 14%: Only 14% of possessions result in a shot. Inefficient against organized LaLiga blocks.

The Riazor Factor

The atmosphere at Riazor might add emotional fuel to the team, helping them claw out draws even when stats are against them. But emotions alone won't fix defensive issues. Hidalgo has his work cut out: improve conversion rate and tighten defense.

Will Hidalgo be able to adjust these metrics in the first few rounds, or will cold stats quickly show that Deportivo isn't ready for LaLiga level? Share your thoughts in the comments! 👇⚽

Remember: this is a baseline, not a final verdict. We'll revisit these stats after their first few games.

Let's see how Deportivo adapts to the new level! 🏟️⚽

Racing are playing Segunda football in a LaLiga world.

Continuing my series on LaLiga’s promoted teams — today we’re focusing on Racing Santander. Quick heads-up: these are averaged stats from their 2025/26 Segunda season, and public data for the second tier is pretty limited. So treat this as a starting point — we’ll see how things evolve in the top flight.

Here’s what the numbers tell us — and why this style could backfire in LaLiga:

* **xG 1.57: They’re creating lots of chances, but most shots are of medium quality. In LaLiga, tighter defenses will block those opportunities way more often.

* **PPDA 10.1: They press really high and burn a ton of energy. If they don’t win the ball back quickly, gaps open up — and Racing could get punished on the counter.

* **56% possession, 84% passing accuracy: They want to control the game and rely heavily on wide play and crosses. But in the top tier, flanks get covered more tightly, and crosses are cleared by taller, stronger defenders.

Overall, Racing wants to dominate, but their tools feel a bit blunt for LaLiga. They’ll need to take smarter shots and be more calculated with their pressing.

What do you think? Will they adapt quickly to LaLiga, or will this style get exposed in the early rounds? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

Left=Sequnda:long-range volume. Right=LaLiga:danger-zone quality. Rasing's profile is still on the left.

Sunday coffee thoughts (11:30 edition): which promoted side is riding the most dangerous stat right now? ☕

I was just going through the Opta/Understat numbers for the three promoted teams, and each of them has one stat that looks great on paper but feels… unsustainable. Thought I’d share and see what you guys think.

  • Deportivo: Their non-penalty xG is solid, but actual non-penalty goals are way lower. They’re creating chances but not finishing. That’s a dangerous gap to carry into LaLiga.
  • Málaga: They’re scoring more than their xG suggests, mostly thanks to set pieces and opponent errors. In LaLiga, that luck tends to run out pretty fast.
  • Racing: High shot volume, but low xG. They’re shooting a lot, but most shots aren’t from good areas — quality over quantity is key here.

Which of these “red flags” worries you the most? Is it the bad finishing, the overperformance, or the low-quality chances? Or do you think something non-stats related (like fixtures or depth) will matter more? Let’s chat. ⚽
