Pinched nerve(?) help
My dog is 5 years old and in great health. Earlier this week for 2 days he started seeming a little off. He was being reclusive, not as excited to see us get home.
By Thursday, he threw up and had diarrhea a couple of times and he was not acting normal so we brought him into the ER vet. He had another diarrhea episode at the vet and they prescribed him the following medicines:
-Maropitant Citrate Inj (Cerenia)
Fluid Therapy - Subcutaneous
LRS Fluids 1000ml
Proviable-Forte Kit
Gabapentin 300mg
And Metamucil.
At this visit, he also started to lose a little control of his back legs. They slightly started to give out but nothing the vet was too worried about. They gave him the gabapentin for that and told us to monitor him. We had an actual vet appointment scheduled the next day.
Friday morning, my dog is seeming a little happier. He isn’t as reclusive and wants to interact with us. He even played a little bit with us. But his legs are way worse than the day prior. He cannot walk without falling or wobbling over every step. He’s collapsing and is even stepping on his foot the wrong way.
We bring him to his vet appointment that morning. the vet thinks he has a pinched nerve in his spine, and prescribes him steroids and tells us to monitor him and try to limit him from jumping or crazy activity.
It’s now Saturday and my dog is not doing any better. The vet said his legs will not be better for a couple of weeks, which is understandable.
He hasn’t been able to go poop since Thursdays vet visit, before he got medicine.
Immediate problem:
It seems like when he tries to go potty he cannot squat right because his legs are collapsing.
How can I help him use the restroom?
Should I still be feeding him if he has not pooped in 48 hours?
Should I still be giving him pro-viable?
I didn’t feed him breakfast but unsure if these medications are okay to be taken with no food.
I cannot bring him to the vet until his next appointment this week, I could take him back to the ER vet but really trying to avoid that.
