Beautyrest black series 1 ultra firm vs Nectar or Saatva

Went today and tested some beds out. My favorite was the Beautyrest black ultra firm. Sales guy said it was a series 1 or something like that. I like the ultra firm feel, like the sealy posture pedic plus ultra firm, but like the better feel and seemingly higher quality of the Beautyrest black. It feels like there’s the right amount of cushion on top of the Beautyrest so it still feels supportive to my upper back and shoulder posture issues, but it doesn’t feel like I’m on the floor. And my girlfriend will probably appreciate the cushion a little more too.

But, I’ve seen a ton of nectar ads, and I’ve see. That a lot of people recommend the Saatva firm instead. I do like Saatva’s 365 day trial so I can just send it back if it sucks or I picked wrong. Thoughts anyone?

Bed in a box or mattress store? Comparing nectar, sealy, napqueen, and coolness (among other Amazon options)

I’m trying to decide on a new bed. I’m currently sleeping on a full size NapQueen that was a hand-me-down from my sister. I actually really like it. With the right sheets, it sleeps pretty cool and is just about the perfect firmness, but it’s time for a change. I’m a 29 yr old 6’1 dude weighing about 200 and active. Have some posture/back issues but nothing serious, I sleep on the hot side, and am looking to bump up to a king size. Budget is about 1500 give or take. I tend to buy everything second hand or DIY it, so I kind of hate the idea of buying something brand new. It feels like a waste of money, and I don’t really buy into the whole 10-20 year solution of the mattress world because I tend to flip things every few years or less. My oldest piece of furniture I’ve had for about 5 years.

I just left a BedzzExpress and liked a Sealy Posture pedic plus “St. Clair” extra firm and medium. My salesman called the extra firm “The Brick” and it was appropriately named. It was like laying on concrete, but I actually really liked it when laying on my back. Felt great, and would’ve bought it without a second thought, but It was a little uncomfortable when I rolled onto my stomach, which I usually do to go to sleep. The medium firmness that was right next to it felt a little more versatile, and was not uncomfortable on any side, but it didn’t have that feeling of complete relief on my back. I sort of missed that. Salesman insisted that they both have the same support level, and that the only difference is the feel, but I can’t reason that with how I didnt feel the “ahhh” relief when I laid flat on the extra firm.

I’m looking for a bed that sleeps on the cold side so I don’t sweat at night, and I’m planning to pair with an adjustable base. Bedzzz express is selling those beds for $999 right now and includes a simple adjustable base that raises the head only for free. Delivery and setup is also included.

I like the idea of the no frills bed in a box model like the nap queen I’m currently on. I also like that it appears I can return most of them if I end up not liking it. BedzzzExpress is either a warranty replacement (problems only up to 10yrs) or a swap done through them up to 4 months. I believe he said it was either a $59 or $99 fee to do it though.

I used to sell mattresses, and tended to think an adjustable base made a bigger difference in the bed comfort than the price tag on the bed. That said, I’ve never had an adjustable base myself because I’ve always thought they were too expensive.

I’ve seen Nectar’s Memorial Day sale offers something like a complete set of cooling sheets and stuff on top of the mattress. I’ve fooled around on the website endlessly, but that nearly $2k price tag just starts to seem like we’re getting into the diminishing returns territory and I really want to avoid that. But, I like that they have the 1 year trial thing like helix. I got to try out helix’s at BedzzzExpress but it was either the $1500 one “Core” that was way too soft and noticeably cheap feeling or the $3000-$4000 one that was better but way more than I want to spend.

Which direction should i go? As a salesman myself, I tend not to believe much in warranties and prefer the ease of the Amazon model of just buying, trying, and returning until I find what I like. I’m assuming going into it that if I buy from BedzzExpress I’ll have a huge PITA headache trying to swap anything or get a warranty claim if I have issues. But theoretically, I can spend more time choosing, and I don’t have to set it up myself, and if I did have an issue I wouldn’t have to get it back out myself. All in theory though. Even my salesman said the mentality is “get it right the first time even if it takes all day to decide.” On Amazon, I like the NapQueen that I currently have, but the CoolNest seems intriguing and obviously pushing the cold thing a lot (which I like and is promising). So, where do I go from here?

Outside the box idea: because I liked the firmness of the Sealy extra firm, I could go that way and then buy a cooling gel topper for it if it ends up being too firm or hot over the long haul?
