Was happy about a job offer until someone close to me disapproved. Now I'm doubting everything.

I recently received an offer for a local part-time job. Initially, I was genuinely happy about it because I've struggled to become financially independent.

I'm 25 years old, and this would be my first serious job offer outside of occasional freelance work. For the past few years, I've spent a lot of time taking care of household responsibilities while also trying to build personal projects related to the field I eventually want to work in independently. Unfortunately, I've had a hard time making progress due to what I suspect is perfectionism, lack of confidence, and difficulty putting my work out there.

The part-time job isn't related to my degree, pays little, and doesn't offer benefits, but the schedule would allow me to keep fulfilling my responsibilities at home while finally earning some income.

The issue is that after telling a close family member about it, they questioned whether I should take it at all. They argued that, since I already have a bachelor's degree, I should instead aim for positions in larger companies or government institutions.

Ever since that conversation, I've felt surprisingly uncomfortable about the job offer. Before talking to them, I was excited. Now I'm second-guessing everything.

Part of me wonders whether I rely too much on other people's approval and whether I internalized some sense that taking a modest, unrelated job somehow means "failing." Another part of me feels upset because this person's advice seemed disconnected from my actual goals and circumstances.

Has anyone experienced something similar? How do you tell the difference between legitimate concerns about a job and simply absorbing other people's expectations?

Hi! I’m a student with a background in web dev who recently finished an introductory UX/UI course. I’ve found myself really drawn to the discipline.

I’m already comfortable with Figma and the basics of design thinking, but I feel my theoretical foundation is still a bit thin. I want to move past "making things look good" and understand the why behind complex web application patterns.

Could you recommend any free or open-access resources (books, case studies, or documentation)?

I’m looking to self-study deeply.

Thanks in advance!
