East Providence Dems back administration's decision refusing to hire traffic detail applicant accused of making racialized comments

From the East Providence Democratic City Committee:

"Over the last few years, our City has made public safety a top priority. We are proud that the administration and City Council continue to invest in the East Providence Police Department, not only with updated equipment but also in recruiting new talent to serve and protect our community.

However, funding and equipment are only one piece of the puzzle.

The other piece is building and maintaining community trust. When trust is high, residents feel safe coming forward to report crime, and our officers earn the genuine respect of the people they serve. Protecting that trust requires accountability.

We are keenly aware of the painful impact racialized policing has had on marginalized communities across the country. That’s why we take a strong stance whenever credible allegations of racism are made against anyone serving our city, whether they are a full-time patrol officer or a traffic detail.

During the Council meeting on Tuesday, August 11, allegations were raised regarding an applicant for a traffic detail position who interjected himself in a traffic stop and made racialized comments.

We stand firmly with the administration and the Chief of Police regarding their hiring decision, and we urge the City Council to support the administration on this matter. We have worked too hard to build public trust in our finest to risk taking a step backward."

The person in the white truck yelling is the retired EPPD officer accused of making said comments.

If you live in MA, CT, RI, VT, NH, or ME, are married to a U.S. citizen, and have a final order of removal.

Sharing this in case it can help someone else.

A fellow Redditor reached out to me and shared information about the Calderon Jimenez v. Mayorkas settlement, and I had never heard about it before, so I wanted to make a post in case anyone here may be in a situation where it could apply to them.

A federal court approved the settlement on January 16, 2025, after a class-action lawsuit involving certain immigrants in New England who are married to U.S. citizens and have final orders of removal.

If you live in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine, are married to a U.S. citizen, and have a final order of removal, you may potentially qualify for protections under the settlement depending on the specific facts of your case.

For qualifying class members, the settlement creates a process through which many people may be able to seek reopening and dismissal of their removal proceedings.

The settlement also includes protections related to immigration enforcement. During the settlement period, ICE generally may not take enforcement action against qualifying class members unless ICE determines that the person poses a public-safety threat.

The settlement is currently scheduled to remain in effect through January 16, 2027.

A few important things to keep in mind (from my understanding/research):

- Having an NTA or currently being in removal proceedings is not the same as having a final order of removal.

- Not everyone with a final removal order will automatically qualify. There are specific eligibility requirements under the settlement.

- The ACLU of Massachusetts has information about the settlement, FAQs, court documents, and a Calderon Joint Motion to Reopen template that attorneys and potential class members can review.

Because the settlement is time-limited and immigration cases are very fact-specific, anyone who thinks this may apply to them should speak with an experienced immigration attorney as soon as possible.

I’m not an attorney and I’m only sharing this because another Redditor was kind enough to send it to me. I figured I would pay it forward in case someone here has a final removal order and had no idea this settlement existed.
