Spare Tire Use
This seems to be HIGHLY debated. Let's say you have a GX running 285 70-17 tires. The OEM spare size is 265 60-18. This calculates to a 6.7% diameter difference between the two sizes.
You're out on a trail, or on the highway in a remote area. Can you safely install and use the smaller OEM wheel size, assuming you're driving low speed - under 20mph? - so you can either get off the trail or to the next town and get the 285 tire fixed?
Assume the center diff is unlocked, no locker's, etc.
Putting all the purse swinging and debate aside...Has anyone actually done this with (or without) success?
I had this situation happen with another vehicle years back. Rear differential was limited slip and I had to put the smaller spare tire on the front and the normal size tire on the rear. All was good until the next exit. I kept my speed under 40 to the next town.
