Need help on End Grain Finishing

I'm building a 60" round white oak table. So far happy with everything except the edge. I used a router with a new upcut bit on a jig to cut the circle, but ended up with a lot of "chattering" on parts of the end grain. I couldn't sand it out and it shows more now that I have stained it. Any recomendations on how to eliminate this now and how to avoid this in the future? I've built other round tables and have never seen this before. Thanks in advance.
