M10 Sponson track mounting

Hi all, I'm looking at doing the Airfix 1/35 in the near future, and looking at this image, I notice that the sponson mounted tracks are carried differently than the kit suggested mounts. Is there an accesory piece I can purchase, or is it a case of adding some spare tracks and custom building to copy the way it has been done in the image?

P-40 Squadron that modified their engines to improve horsepower?

I'm doing a little research after picking up a couple of P-40 model kits, and I vaguely remember reading about a squadron that tuned the engines on their aircraft to improve the power, I can't remember much more than that, however i'm looking to learn more about this squadron or for someone to tell me it was a complete work of fiction. Thanks!
