Sealing smudging permanant marker on bookcloth?

I rebound a copy of the Silmarillion and after testing a number of methods to color the cover, I found that the bic permanent markers looked good and work well with a paper stencil.

Most other methods I tried were bleeding a lot around the stencil.

After testing on a test book I learned rebinding on, I realized it smudged on my fingers a couple of days later when touching it.

Is there a way to seal it to be able to use the permanent markers but prevent the smudging?

I heard hairspray can work but that it can also be used to remove permanent marker, so I would love to have more insight/opinions !
