Travel Tips for World Cup Visit?
Hola, mis amigos! I hope not to spam your subreddit with these posts but my American self and some friends and a Tunisian friend will be traveling down to your city for both Tunisian group stage matches (some of us staying the whole week). We’re very excited about the matches and to experience the international party that is the World Cup! Of course, we are looking for fun stuff to do in the meantime as well which I why I come to you!
We’re staying at some AirBnBs near the Centro Area for the first weekend and near the Valle Alto area (is that an area?) the second weekend. I’m probably going to try to find a hotel downtown for mid-week. I understand the traffic in Monterrey can be bad and we weren’t planning on renting a car, so I figure we’ll want to Uber to somewhere walkable to the stadium maybe hours ahead of the actual game start time, yes? Any general tips for getting around? Is the downtown area walkable for able-bodied, 20-30-something men? We can get around pretty well on foot but if it’s untenable, let me know.
My understanding is that the weather can be HOT and muggy in the summer, so we’ll definitely bring lots of water but I don’t know if you have any tips for staying hydrated? I guess bug spray and sunscreen is probably recommended as well?
My brothers speak Spanish, but even though I studied it in high-school, I have a pretty limited grasp, though I know some basics. I assume it’s worth brushing up on as much as I can before the trip (though we also have LLMs and Google translate now)?
What would you say might be good recommendations for things to do between the games during the week? Not having a rental car limits us, but we generally like hiking, food, museums, bars, barcades, sports, music. Please let me know anything you think might be fun to check out (and maybe areas to avoid). We will be working remotely between the games, so on some days might just go try to see a summer blockbuster that gets released in the evening or something. Hey, if you’re local and want to make some international friends for a week, we’re pretty chill and it would be cool to connect!
I know there’s a lot of tension in the world right now and I know being the host city for stuff like this can be a stressor for the locals but we want to be respectful guests! We’re really excited to visit and I hope you all are excited to be hosting at least a little bit! I’m from Milwaukee which has a big Mexican-American population so lots of Mexican friends and I’m excited to finally visit the country under such a fun context!
Thanks in advance for your insight!
Edit: Also, dumb question: How is the best way to go about exchanging USD for pesos? Do most places accept Visa or is everything cash?
