Just finished [ volume 13] "Wasted Effort All Around" of Mushoku Tensei and I honestly didn't expect Pax's character to leave this much of an impact on me.

I used to hate Pax. But watching how much he changed and understanding what shaped the person he used to be made me look at him differently. Beneath all his flaws and arrogance and cruelty was someone who simply wanted to be acknowledged. Someone who wanted to hear that his efforts mattered. That someone was proud of him. That someone believed in him. Yet even after trying to change and giving everything he had he was still denied the one thing he had always needed.

I would have loved to see the other possible future where he became the king Shirone needed. But that wasn't the path his story took. And perhaps that's what makes his ending hurt so much. Before dying he entrusted Benedict and his unborn son to Randolph and asked him to shower the boy with so much praise that he would grow up spoiled. It sounds almost absurd on the surface but knowing what Pax went through there's something devastatingly human about that request. He wanted his son to grow up with the very thing he had spent his entire life desperately searching for. Faith. Encouragement. Someone who believed in him without making him earn every last bit of it.

And yet despite how heartbreaking Pax's ending was I found myself feeling grateful that Zanoba loved his younger brother until the very end. Pax was all that remained of his family and seeing Zanoba's grief made their relationship hit even harder. I wish they could have been closer from the beginning. I wish things had turned out differently for both of them. But at least before it was over we got to see just how much their bond meant.

What hurts most about Pax's story is that he wasn't simply a bad person who became better. He was someone who tried to become better and still couldn't escape the weight of everything that had shaped him. His efforts weren't meaningless but the world never gave him the recognition he needed to believe that for himself.

This is what I love so much about Mushoku Tensei. Its characters don't feel like they exist merely to fulfill a role in the plot. They feel like people with their own insecurities and contradictions and regrets and reasons for becoming who they are. Their development feels gradual and earned. And sometimes understanding a character doesn't mean forgiving everything they've done. Sometimes it simply means finally seeing the person behind their actions.

I felt that with Pax and I loved every bit of it. There's something special about a story that can make you reconsider someone you once hated not by erasing their flaws but by helping you understand them. And there's something even more special about a story that can make a character's final moments feel like the culmination of everything they've ever been.

I don't really have anyone to talk to about how much I love this series so I wanted to put these thoughts somewhere. I hope I managed to convey what I felt without making this too confusing. I'm not always good at putting my thoughts into words but this chapter genuinely moved me.

I'd love to hear what you all thought about Pax and his ending. Did your perspective on him change as well?

Until next time.
