Hey everyone,
I’m having a really frustrating issue with my BMW F36 440i and I’m trying to figure out what’s going on.
Main problem: At lower RPMs (around 2.5–3k), especially in 3rd or 4th gear at WOT, the car feels noticeably underpowered. It takes way longer to get going compared to how it used to feel. The weird part is that if I reset adaptations, the car feels perfectly fine again—but only for about 1–2 weeks. After that, it gradually goes back to feeling sluggish.
Transmission / throttle behavior:
At ~40–50% throttle, the car usually only downshifts one gear
→ e.g. cruising at ~1k RPM → press gas halfway → goes to ~2k RPM but doesn’t really accelerate
I then have to press harder to force another downshift before it actually starts pulling
Even at WOT (without kickdown), it sometimes only drops to ~3k RPM, which still feels weak
On slight uphill roads, it often refuses to downshift and tries to climb at ~1k RPM, causing vibrations (high load / low RPM situation)
It feels like the car isn’t calculating load properly and doesn’t know what gear it should be in.
Driving feel (very strange):
In stop-and-go traffic, the car feels “jumpy”
Pressing the gas makes it lunge forward
Letting off causes a noticeable drivetrain movement / stutter
Overall, it sometimes feels like driving a manual with poor clutch control
Gear shifts:
Shifts are often not smooth or continuous
It feels like I briefly lift off and reapply the throttle during every shift
You can even hear it in the exhaust — it’s not a smooth transition between gears
In Sport+, at ~50–60% throttle, shifts sometimes feel like a slight braking effect before engaging
Performance observations:
Sport displays show expected HP and torque
0–60 time is basically identical to before (tested in same conditions)
At higher RPMs (4–5k+), the issue is much less noticeable
Despite similar performance numbers, the car feels significantly weaker, especially in the low-mid range
What I’ve tried:
Swapped MAF sensor with a friend
→ No change in low-RPM power issue
→ BUT gear selection behavior improved with his MAF (more responsive, better downshifts)
Reset adaptations (fuel mixture, VANOS, Valvetronic, etc.)
→ Car runs perfectly for ~2 weeks, then the issue slowly returns
Reset throttle body adaptations
→ Fixes weird shifting temporarily (~1 week), then comes back
At this point I’m starting to think something is causing the adaptations to “drift” over time.
Summary:
Sluggish low-RPM response
Poor / inconsistent downshifting logic
Jerky, unnatural gear changes
Temporary fix with adaptation resets
Feels like ECU/TCU isn’t adapting correctly long-term
Has anyone experienced something similar on the B58 + ZF8 combo? Any ideas what could cause adaptations to fix things temporarily but not permanently?
Appreciate any input 🙏
