Concerned about potential accident after witnessing something odd

So the other day there were two big crash noises and I went outside and a car had smashed into a wall after slipping down an incline at a business. It then carried on and hit the opposite wall, so smashed in the front and the back. It was parked at the time with nobody in it.

The handbrake was on and locked, so did the cable just snap? Could this happen to any car? I'm a bit concerned because at home my parking space backs onto my garden on an incline towards it, 5 feet above it, and if that happened to me I'd basically have a new weird garden decoration because we couldn't fit a crane down the lane to remove the car.

I haven't been driving too long and wondered if this was a very unusual thing to happen, or should I be putting chocks behind my wheels just in case? I assume the cable is checked when an MOT is done, but if his just gave up then so could anyone's.

I have an automatic so can't leave it in gear. Sorry if this is stupid, I just never considered it as a worry, and now it is
