The beetles are back

It’s time, the Japanese beetles have returned and this year they have chosen to feast not only on my roses and hydrangeas but my hollyhock too.

Last year I hand picked them off, this year I’ve placed a hanging beetle trap in my front yard - about 50ft from my flowering garden. But I’m reading such mixed reviews about the traps. If they aren’t recommended why are they sold? Is there another purpose they have I’m missing? Is neem oil a better strategy?

Looking for any tips or tricks for Japanese beetle mitigation you’ve been successful with. TIA and god speed fellow gardeners!🫡

Does Ottawa have any good Chinese/Hong Kong bakeries like Cocobun or Harmonie?

I’m really missing the Chinese/Hong Kong style bakeries in Montreal (Cocobun, Harmonie, etc.). I’ve tried looking in Ottawa but haven’t found anything that compares.

It’s the self-serve style walking in, grabbing a tray, and filling it with more egg tarts than any reasonable person needs that hits.

Does anything like that exist in Ottawa?

Is this smoke bush ever coming back?

A friend was downsizing their smoke bush and gave me a large section of it this spring. I transplanted it in early May (Zone 5b).

So far, there has been absolutely no new growth, but when I scratch the stems they're still green underneath. The shrub feels firmly rooted now, and it seems like the root system may be establishing itself, but there are no leaves or buds anywhere.

It's planted in a south-facing location that gets full sun all day.

Is there still a reasonable chance it could come back, or does this sound like a lost cause at this point? Has anyone had a smoke bush take this long to break dormancy after being transplanted?
