Looking for French drain advice

Hello French drain people, my husband and I are in the process of fixing the French drain that the previous owner put in incorrectly. They put dirt over the pipe, and then rocks on top of that. We would like to take out all of the dirt, put the existing rock at the lowest level over the pipe and then add decorative rock on the top layer. Anyone know of a good way to filter out the dirt/mud but keep the rocks? Our best idea was a bucket with holes in a wheel barrow. Spray down the dirt/rocks, the dirt/water will flow into the wheel barrow and the rocks will stay in the bucket? We have a very long stretch of French drain down the side of our house, about 8-10 inches wide and maybe 6-8 inches deep down to the top of the pipe. We also saw that there is supposed to be some type of filter fabric covering the pipe? Is that feasible to add at this stage? It’s gonna be a messy road!
