UK Conveyancing Solicitors - why the perception of being so slow?

I'm going through the house moving process, and the general consensus is that solicitors are slow and usually the 'problem' in slowing down house sales.

Never had a chance to speak to or know a conveyancing solcitor so thought I'd take to Reddit to ask your thoughts on this.

Are you slow? Are just most slow?

Or is it the actual process of getting back searches, information (requesting forms, certificates from clients), etc that makes it longer.

This isn't meant as a solicitor bashing thread. Just curious to hear it from the other side.
