I’m in my early 40s and, whether this qualifies as a midlife pivot or just the next professional challenge, I am trying to qualify as a solicitor in New South Wales.

I’m a U.S. attorney with 15 years of practice. I hold a J.D., an LL.M. in Taxation, and am Board Certification in Taxation from California (as well as other state admissions). My practice is heavily focused on international inbound tax, trusts and estates, cross-border inheritance, and structuring issues. I’m self-employed and frequently serve as co-counsel or the US (co-)executor complex international T&E matters so I have tremendous flexibility.

Over the years I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to Australia (both professionally and personally), and I’m exploring what it would look like to build a stronger international practice.

I’ve just received my assessment from the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) regarding my foreign academic qualifications. As expected, I need to complete the following three Priestly subjects: Australian Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, and Real Property through an Australian university before moving on to Practical Legal Training (PLT).

I have a three questions for those who’ve gone through this process (especially other foreign-qualified lawyers):

  • Any recommendations on universities or programs for completing the required subjects online? I’ve been in contact with the University on Canberra about their Online Program and can start classes in May. This seems to be the simplest pathway to fulfilling this requirement. Has anyone had issues with the LPAB accepting online classes from the University on Canberra?
  • For those who’ve done PLT, any programs that are particularly well-regarded or flexible?
  • Can I submit for my PLT assessment before I complete my required Priestly classes.

I’m not looking to rush the process, just to understand it clearly and do it right.

I appreciate any insight from those who’ve been through it.
