As a recently retired federal IT security officer I believe this fraud method is increasingly important to know about and work out methods for prevention.

Check cooking fraud systemic prevention
Check cooking is creation of images of checks, either from a photo image of an actual check or AI from as little as an account number; many copies are made using your account number fraudulently and different payee names; the check images are then deposited into the scammer accounts . Banks accept deposits by photo images of checks and do not require an actual document. While this has long been true the recent ubiquity of AI image tools is leading to exponential rise. Currently it is awkward or impossible to fight this as no interaction on your part, as the owner of payer account from which these are supposedly drawn is not involved except as victim. It is digital check washing on steroids. HOWEVER I understand, neither confidently nor in detail, that the ACH digital systems by which banks transmit check clearing information does include a marker which distinguishes the specie of the transaction - whether the deposit into the fraudster's bank against your account is a paper check or digital check or other. BUT I do not know of any banks supporting any mechanism by which an account owner can elect to permanently disallow deductions from one's account arising from transactions which originated by deposit of a digital image. I presume that such a method would interfere with making telephone payments for bills, but check cooking is about to become an extremely major problem. So: thoughts????
