A weird one. I started a degree last year so instantly notified my employer and started paying the higher tax rate. This was in January 2025. My first degree was paid off, so I had no prior HECS debt left over. My first HECS bill appeared in myGov in March 2025. I just did my taxes for 2024-5 and got the money I expected to go towards that loan back in my return. No money was applied to my loan in myGov. I’ve asked my accountant about it and he doesn’t know why the ATO didn’t apply the money to the loan. I make well over the threshold. Has anyone had this happen before? I wondered if it was a timing thing.
