Troubleshooting QEMU/KVM passthrough for 14 hours. Anyone got tips?

I have 2 discrete GPU's one 3080it and one Quadro RTX 4000. Attempting to passthrough the Quadro to a VM in Virt Manager. After bricking my desktop a few times I've managed to isolate the Quadro from the host but the VM will not boot with the added pcie hardware.

Looking for up to date tutorial for GPU passthrough

On Fedora 44 I keep breaking my system trying to get GPU passthrough to work. I have 2 discrete GPU's, both Nvidia, one is a 3080ti in the x16 slot the other is a Quadro RTX 4000 in x4. I want to passthrough the Quadro to VM. Looking for a source that explains everything completely so I stop breaking my system everytime I attempt this.

Ethernet not working anymore

On Fedora 44 Ethernet worked fine. Power went out while system was asleep. Turned back on and ethernet is no longer working, no lights on port, ip link shows connection is down. Wifi works fine. Tried sudo ip link set dev (device name) up, nothing happens. Searching on Google gives me a 7 step process to fix. I don't understand this it was already working. Running journalctl -u NetworkManager shows: state change unmanaged unavailable (reason 'managed', managed-type "external".

Why? What happened to my wired connection?

Edit:

everything I've searched says it's because of a bad cable. physical ethernet cable is fine, not damaged, not improperly connected and is correctly connected to my router. it is not a problem with my cable.

Just to be clear the cable works without issues when connected to any other PC.

Edit:

Did a EC reset which got my port recognized by the system. Still had limited connectivity. Disabled IPv6 and set IPv4 method to automatic. Restarted Network Manager and got a successful connection. Probably a more efficient way to solve the problem but its working and I've learned more about how Linux works in the process. Appreciate the comments from everyone.

Everything was fine until I tried to install Steam and Nvidia drivers

Installed MX 25.1 AHS and had everything running fine then I bricked my system trying to install Nvidia drivers. Frantically trying to fix it just messed things up worse.

After many attempts I was able to get the open source driver working but no luck getting Nvidia drivers working. The open source driver won't keep my displays on, the only way to get them back is to unplug and plug back in.

Seems like this install is just fundamentally broken and I suspect my bootable USB may be corrupted. I could try troubleshooting more but I'm thinking I should redownload the iso and reflash for a fresh install and start from there.

I'm at work rn reading and bookmarking threads in the mx forum and I think I have the information I need to get the Nvidia drivers working again.

What I'd like to ask is: Should I even bother with all this? I really liked the XFCE desktop and the way MX is set up but it seems like Nvidia drivers are very troublesome with Debian based distros from what I've been reading users have had similar issues with Nvidia driver for a decade plus.

I pretty much use my PC for 3 things, digital drawing, audio editing and gaming. Gaming is the least important but not something I'm willing to give up just to run a specific distro. MX had everything else I want but getting Steam working with an Nvidia GPU seems like a total headache. However, I'm not entirely convinced I wouldn't run into the same issues with a different distro. So I'm not really sure what to do next.

Would more experienced users suggest I tough it out and go through the process of reinstalling and trying again or would I be better off abandoning my desire to stick with MX?

Installed MX 25 last night. First Linux install. Had some hiccups but I managed to get everything working right with some reading and patience. The terminal is my best friend now. Going to tinker more after work.
