Job Offer Rescinded

Im graduating college in a week, and the job ive done 3 interviews for extended me an offer for 65k. The job is was good and I got no bad vibes from the company. They seemed incredibly enthusiastic about me joining. I decided to counter the offer by asking if I could have a slight increase in salary, mainly due to my not being eligible for any sort of bonus until 15 months after my start date. I thought I had a bit of leverage because I have two relevant degrees and a some larger corporate internships under my belt. Of course this doesnt give me all the leverage, but it never hurts to ask before you sign, or so I thought. The recruiter calls me back saying that the team is not willing to increase the salary and are concluding all negotiations at this time. I say I am willing to accept the offer as is under the current terms no issue. Then they go on to tell me they are looking at an internal candidate to fill the role, but they will call me back to see if I am still able to accept the offer. They go on to call me back, saying they have proceeded with the internal candidate for the role and are no longer considering me. They said the internal candidate will be more easily integrated into the role, and that the team felt I didnt express the "enthusiasm" for the role they were looking for. Up until this point, I had been very enthusiastic and adamant about the getting role, except for the question about a salary increase. Im a bit lost directionally now, cause it was really upsetting hearing about this. Did I do something severely wrong on my end or is this company unusual. They are a subset of a large fortune 100.
