should i major in statistics or accounting?
i’m a high school senior going to college soon and stuck between majoring in statistics and accounting
i really like comparing and ranking stuff and looking at the data behind things and think research is cool and i don’t want to be locked into a set career path so i think statistics would be a good fit for me
but accounting has a more obvious direct career path and most companies need an accountant while there isn’t always an obvious need for someone with a background in statistics and it’s also versatile since accounting majors can do most of what other business related majors can do
my school has an accounting and business analytics major so maybe i can do stuff similar to what i might’ve done if i just stuck with accounting while also being an accountant?
i have college credits from AP exams and could probably get a statistics degree in three years but accounting is really credit-heavy at my school and if i choose accounting i’ll want to become a CPA which requires 150 credit hours so i’ll probably be there for the full four years and spend more money doing that
i heard accountants have a really bad work life balance and i’m fine with that but i also haven’t had a job yet so i wouldn’t trust myself saying that
i know engineering usually pays more than accounting and is also versatile and doesn’t require grad school but my dad has an engineering degree and i really want to do something different from him and i have no interest in making stuff and dont want to stay in college for probably five years and force myself through really difficult classes i dont care about
i’m probably not going to become a statistician since i have no intention of going to grad school and don’t want to aim for a career dependent upon grad school
i like the idea of studying statistics more than accounting but i’m not sure if i should choose something without a very direct career path
