I need a different hero, so I sent Maeve off to commit Seppuku. Have you ever killed a hero off intentionally to pick another?

I was playing a round the other day, and yes, I did spend some gold to get a glimpse of his local forces. Later on though I notice that he has two Alvin York units. As you can see they are very separated, and have different number of infantry. I was so confused by this that I actually asked him about it. When I would select each one, it would also have a different unit name for each. Is this a bug, or is that first one an artifact from the snapshot I bought earlier?
