You’re packing your suitcase, checking that your passport is in your backpack, and counting down the days until you catch a plane to take you somewhere new. What songs capture the mix of emotions - excitement, anxiety, fear of the unknown, the lure of independence … - that you’re feeling about leaving home and starting your adventure?

The CSUSB Education Abroad Office is offering a winter intersession study abroad program – this is your opportunity to visit Chennai, India to explore social problems and interventions. Stay on the beautiful campus of Madras Christian College (MCC), attend mini-classes, and shadow MCC students as they intern with local social service agencies. Explore social work and social welfare through a distinctly Indian cultural lens!

The program is designed for Bachelor's and Master's level social work students, as well as those interested in other human service related fields including psychology, sociology, counseling, and the medical field.

Study Abroad India, Winter 2027

• You will be enrolled in SW 5031 in the Fall 2026 semester and travel over winter break 1/1/27 - 1/16/27 (no winter enrollment / winter tuition required). 
• All students welcome! SW students earn elective credit for BA or MSW degree. 
• Program directors: Deirdre Lanesskog (Social Work) & Frank McAlpin (Social Work).
• Program Fee of $3600 includes international airfare from LAX, accommodations, and most in-country transportation and meals. Advertised cost includes CSUSB Presidential International Education Award ($500). Additional $500 fee is assessed ($4100 total program fee) for participants who are not degree-seeking CSUSB students (and so do not qualify for the presidential award). 
• Graduating in Fall 2026? No problem. You can still walk in the fall graduation ceremony, but your degree will be delayed until after you return from India and your SW 5031 grade is reported.

SPOTS ARE LIMITED to 18 participants that are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. You are encouraged to apply as soon as you are able to commit to participation.
