Cairo as a female wheelchair user?
Hi all,
What it says on the tin. I'm contemplating going to Cairo for five days next spring as part of an art study group. I'm a female wheelchair user (mid 30s). We'll be staying in Bayt Yakan and walking to classes in local mosques etc. with the group leaders (European, but with experience and contacts in Cairo) I can't decide whether or not to go, and I was hoping to get some advice from locals or those who have been in Cairo recently.
- I'm assuming that the staring will be worse as I use a wheelchair, but I'm worried by all the stories of harassment on here. On the other hand, maybe the wheelchair would mean I can avoid that...
- Toilets - is it fairly easy to find Western style toilets that I would be able to use during the day?
I use a wheelchair outdoors or for long distances, but can also walk with crutches and tackle short flights of steps. The group organisers would be happy to lift the wheelchair into buildings with steps for me so that I can keep it with me. I have an attachment on my chair which lifts the front wheels to make cobbles/uneven streets etc. easier
Any thoughts much appreciated! I'm trying to decide if the experience would be practical, and worth any potential hassle.
